Patagonia, Argentina - rock climbing



An American climber named Cassy Doolittle died while climbing in Patagonia last week, her family is now seeking help to bring her remains home. A fundraiser was started by a friend of Doolittle who worked with her at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. According to the friend, Doolittle sent out a distress call while rock climbing in Argentina but due to unforgiving terrain and too few rescue volunteers, her body could not be recovered. The family has now hired a team to recover her remains and transport her to a funeral home.

  On January 27, 1999, an avalanche struck Grouse Mountain in North Shore, Vancouver, killing one hiker and injuring four others. Ken Rutland, a hiker on the trail, became a hero after he discovered and helped two of the survivors. Rutland also dug out a severely injured man, K.B., who was trapped in the snow. Rutland tried to keep the two injured hikers warm and safe by cutting a landing on the steep hillside, but several more avalanches hit the area before North Shore Rescue personnel arrived. Rutland continued to assist the rescue team. The search for R.M., the missing hiker, continued for four months before his body was finally recovered.

Icefields Parkway, AB, Canada - ice climbing

  Zach Milligan, a well-known climber with close ties to Yosemite, has died in an accident on Polar Circus, a 700-metre WI5 climb in the Canadian Rockies. Parks Canada's visitor safety team found his body at the bottom of a cliff in the area. Milligan had previously made history by becoming the first person to ski down Half Dome, and was known for his solo climbs.
