Buckskin Gulch, Utah, USA - backpacking, flash flood

Two hikers have died and one has been injured after being caught in a flash flood in a canyon on the Utah/Arizona border. The group of three men began hiking towards Lees Ferry for what was supposed to be a three-day expedition. The hikers were caught in a flash flood, likely caused by moisture from the atmospheric river that engulfed California last week. The surviving hiker was found with an infrared camera and winched into a helicopter. The two deceased hikers were identified as Bill Romaniello and Jeff Watson. Unusually heavy rain across the west means that conditions in the area will remain unusually dangerous for probably a couple of months. Fatal incidents from flash floods occur nationwide every year, with nearly 2,000 people losing their lives from floods and flash floods between 1995 and 2021.
